Ikebana: The Art of Balance
An ikebana-inspired workshop on balance, structure, and intention
The Vintage Lisbon × THE CURATED Lisbon × Kokuga Flower Studio
This workshop invites participants into the world of contemporary floral composition, inspired by the principles of Ikebana — the Japanese art of flower arrangement.
Guided by florist Nathan Kunigami, the session explores the relationship between form, space, and intention, encouraging a slower and more conscious approach to working with natural materials.
The Experience
• Introduction to Ikebana as a source of inspiration
• Demonstration of fundamental floral composition techniques
• Guidance on structure, balance, and spatial awareness
• Selection of flowers and materials
• Creation of a personal floral arrangement
• Individual feedback and artistic direction
Workshop Description
The session begins with a brief introduction to Ikebana and its influence on Nathan’s practice, followed by a live demonstration of essential techniques used to create balanced and expressive arrangements. Participants are then invited to create their own small composition, receiving guidance in selecting flowers and assembling them with intention and harmony. The workshop emphasizes observation, restraint, and sensitivity to materials — allowing each arrangement to emerge as a quiet and personal expression.

About the Artist
Nathan Kunigami is a florist and the founder of Kokuga Flower Studio, based in Lisbon. Half Brazilian and half Japanese, Nathan began exploring floral design in Tokyo in 2017, studying Ikebana — the Japanese art of flower arrangement. A year later, he left his corporate career to pursue this path, refining his practice in San Francisco with floral studios Tango & Foxtrot and Studio Mondine. Since then, he has created work for clients including Prada, Loewe, Chanel, Bulgari, Shiseido, Four Seasons, and Tivoli. Kokuga — Nathan’s original Japanese family name — reflects both his heritage and his approach: thoughtful, balanced, and contemporary floral design.
